East Coast Railway to Use IDS to prevent elephant hits on railway tracks

The installation of the system will encompass all elephant crossing places falling under the control of the East Coast Railway (ECoR), with a total expenditure of Rs 79.12 crore. According to the available sources, the utilization of current optical fibers is planned for the purpose of sensor integration in this particular gadget.

The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has formulated a strategic initiative to implement intrusion detection systems (IDS) inside the susceptible areas of elephant passage zones and elephant corridors in the state of Odisha. This measure aims to mitigate the unfortunate occurrence of elephant fatalities resulting from collisions with trains.

The acoustic system, constructed with fiber optic technology, enables real-time detection of elephants on the railway. Based on information provided by railway sources, it has been reported that the AI-based system has the capability to monitor and detect irregular movement along a 60-kilometre section. Furthermore, this system is designed to promptly alert control offices, station masters, gatemen, and loco pilots regarding the presence of elephants on the railway track.

The areas designated for the installation of the device are Maneswar-Bamur, Turekela-Lakhna, Mahanadi, and Narla-Therubali within the Sambalpur circle. on addition, the installation of this device will also be implemented on the Kapilas Road-Raja Athagarh-Angul, Rambha-Ganjam, and Nayagarh-Parjanpur sections inside the Khordha Road circuit.

In addition to its role in elephant conservation, the Intelligent Detection System (IDS) is purportedly capable of detecting rail fractures, identifying instances of trespassing on railway tracks, and providing alerts for disaster mitigation in relation to unauthorized excavation near railway tracks and landslides in close proximity to the tracks.

The North East Frontier Railway has implemented the Intelligent Detection System (IDS) in order to mitigate train-elephant collisions, building upon the positive outcomes of a preliminary initiative.

The Union Railway minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has issued a directive to all railway zones to implement the system as well.
